Visit The Learning Zone

You Can Find Electricity in the Unlikeliest Places

From electric eels to wheels on electrical cars, if it's got an electrical connection you'll find it at The Learning Zone. Check out this electrical resource on Manitoba Hydro's website, www.learningzone.hydro.mb.ca. •  The Electric Universe is a multi-dimensional source of information on electricity, experiments, word games, research material and even careers. Louie's Space, featuring Louie the Lightning Bug, is designed for children from kindergarten through grade four. New Frontiers is geared to children in grades five to eight while Mind Power is for high school students. Adults will enjoy the side trips offered at Power Plus.
•  The Schoolhouse is a valuable resource that teachers can use in planning activities both in and outside of the classroom.
•  Kid's Zone is interactive and anything can happen. Find out who is smarter: the Power Smart Electrosaurus or you.
•  Energy Underground is a brand new section dedicated to natural gas facts with information on science, history and safety.

Visit The Manitoba Electrical Museum and  Education Centre

With an enormous yellow turbine runner beckoning your entrance into the historic  Harrow Terminal Station, you can't miss the building at 680 Harrow Street that now houses the Manitoba Electrical Museum and Education Centre.

Enter to find a giant green dinosaur, Electrosaurus, who greets you with Power Smart messages in his prehistoric footprints. Inside you will find that the 1931 building has been modernized with contemporary design and innovative energy efficient technologies, while it showcases some of the oldest electrical devices invented.

Climb inside the electric streetcar, see the first electric kitchen appliances, discover what year your community got electricity, or test your knowledge with the award winning Play It Safe game. You can even try one of the many scavenger hunts the museum offers as you wander the gallery.

"Imagine living without electricity" is the museum's tag line. Interactive exhibits and the retired electrical workers who volunteer as tour guides encourage you to consider just how much we depend on energy today.

New exhibits and seasonal showings occur throughout the year, including All That Glows: Then and Now holiday lighting celebration (November 15, 2006 -January 12, 2007). There is no charge for admission and the museum is open Monday to Thursday, 1:00 pm  to 4:00 pm. Call (204) 477-7905 for more information or visit www.hydro.mb.ca/museum
